Ilić was part of the Serbia squad that officially ended its run at the continental championship on Monday, following a 26:25 defeat to Austria — a result that was confirmed by Germany’s 34:32 win over Spain.
Shortly afterwards, Ilić decided not to continue playing for the national team and explained his reasons in a message posted on social media.
“Since 2012, I’ve had the honour of representing my country — wearing the crest on my chest, singing the anthem, and sharing the court with incredible teammates. Along the way, there was everything: great moments, important victories, painful defeats, battles and emotions that are never forgotten. Every call-up and every minute in this jersey had, and will always have, a special weight and an immeasurable honour. It was a particular privilege for me to serve as captain of the Serbia national team. Thank you to everyone who was part of this journey! I’m leaving proud and grateful,” Ilić wrote on Instagram.
