The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) says it has distributed winter clothing and blankets to addiction treatment centers in Afghanistan with the support of the government of Malta.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 20, the UNODC said that the need for assistance to support people with substance use disorders in Afghanistan remains high.
According to the office, harsh winter conditions have placed these individuals at increased risk.
The UNODC emphasized that it will continue its efforts to support people affected by substance use disorders across the country.
Although no comprehensive study has been conducted in recent years to determine the exact number of people with drug addiction in Afghanistan, the Taliban claim that around five million people, including one million women, are addicted to drugs in the country.
