The Slovenian national team was left without a coach after the loss to Kosovo, as Matjaz Kek was fired.
Former Slovenian national team player, Bostjan Cesar (43), has been officially appointed the new coach of the Slovenian national football team.
Cesar holds the record for appearances with the national team, with a total of 102 matches played, while for many years he also held the captain’s armband.
He was part of the Slovenian national team at the 2010 World Cup, contributing to Slovenia’s qualification to the biggest stage of world football for the second time in history.
He spent most of his football career in Italy, mainly at Chievo Verona, where over a ten-year period he played 247 official matches and scored nine goals.

His international experience also includes stints in France, with Marseille and Grenoble, as well as in England with West Bromwich Albion, which gave him a wide knowledge of the different schools of European football.
After ending his playing career, Cesar turned to coaching. He initially managed the Slovenian U-19 national team, and in January 2022 he joined the national team’s A staff as Matjaz Kek’s first assistant.
Cesar was also part of the technical staff during the greatest success of Slovenian football in recent years, when the national team qualified and reached the round of 16 of the 2024 European Championship.
In the absence of Matjaz Kek, he has also successfully led the national A team. During this period, under his leadership, Slovenia remained undefeated in five matches, including a convincing 2:0 victory in a friendly against Portugal. /Telegraph/
