FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Following the Trump administration’s push to claim Greenland as a U.S. territory, a petition is encouraging Denmark to flip the script and offer to buy the nation’s Golden State.

On Saturday, Jan. 17, President Donald Trump announced he would charge a 10% import tax starting in February, potentially reaching 25% by June, on goods from eight European countries, including Denmark and Norway, if no deal was made for “the complete and total purchase of Greenland,” according to the AP.

The following day, AP reported Trump had sent a message to Norwegian Prime Minister Gahr Støre that read in part, “Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace.”

In response to those rising tensions, the “Denmarkification” group was made to “buy California from Donald Trump.”

The petition cites “gaining an extra bunch of tech bros,” “colossal freedom,” and “avocado toast forever” as benefits for both Danish citizens and Californians. Petitioners believe Trump would be open to the deal as he has claimed the state to be “the most ruined state in the union,” adding, “if Trump wants to sell California, he’ll sell California.”

Since its launch, the petition has gained 287,047 signatures of the intended 500,000, and ultimately plans to crowdfund $1 trillion to move the initiative forward.
