Russian President [Vladimir Putin](https://www.wsj.com/topics/person/vladimir-putin) has sought to undermine NATO for nearly two decades. Now, as President Trump pushes to control Greenland, Moscow is cheering from the sidelines.
The remarks spoke directly to the fears of some European leaders that Trump’s move to take Greenland would degrade the norms of international law and potentially embolden Putin further in Ukraine and Eastern Europe, where smaller countries rely almost entirely on the collective might of the alliance.
“It’s a five alarm emergency that’s dividing North America from Europe,” said John Foreman, a former U.K. defense attaché in Moscow and Kyiv. “Russia must be sitting back thinking Christmas just keeps coming.”
Probably but they are not cheering on Europe increasing their military budget and increasing independence from the US. A strong united Europe is literally the last thing Putin wants.
Russia is also suffering outrageously in Ukraine. Its ally Maduro just got captured like a Pokemon. Iran was bombed, is drowning in domestic issues, and might get bombed again. Syria collapsed into a (sort of) western aligned opposition government. Russia is getting its shadow fleet tankers captured by the US, who is still against all apparent odds sending Ukraine aid.
Yeah yeah Trump but trying to make this stuff look like anything other than an abysmal time geopolitically for Russia is a joke. From the Russian perspective they are losing pretty much everywhere. US + European ties are irrelevant when the US + Europe still independently are opposing Russia in every theater.

I don’t know why we aren’t;t seeing this for what it is…a slow burn walk to disaster that could be solved with a push in Ukraine. There are many dangers but at this point I guess we’re only worries that Russia would try to nuke nato and not the USA, or worse the USA would join in?

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday appeared to give Moscow’s blessing to Trump’s desire to take the island, [comparing Greenland](https://www.wsj.com/livecoverage/greenland-trump-tariffs-trade-eu/card/russia-s-lavrov-compares-greenland-to-crimea-annexation-HuoZ1jqFY5PrkHUbbquX?mod=article_inline) to Russia’s first land grab on Ukrainian territory—the 2014 annexation of Crimea, Kyiv’s peninsula on the Black Sea. “Crimea is no less important for the Russian Federation than Greenland is for the United States,” he said.
