Okay, this is just getting beyond ridiculous. That his cabinet hasn’t invoked the 25th or Congress hasn’t impeached and removed him is as apt a demonstration as to why Parliamentary democracy, for all its foibles, is the far superior system.

A “framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, **the entire Arctic Region**”. Good news for Europe in the short term, but concerning about the scope of what the US expects to come from negotiations with the secretary of NATO and not Danish, EU or Canadian leaders.

He seemed so pissed in that speech, like a scolded child. I think there was finally another one of those “you found our line” private Republican delegations he occasionally got sent in his first presidency.

Rutte cannot negotiate for Denmark so he must have just stated things that are already in place.
God everything is so stupid. We are at the whims of a mad king during the end of Rome.

He’s 1000% all talk. I think he has no idea what he even says at this point. It’s all complete bullshit. I can’t even take him seriously anymore, he’s such a buffoon.

Trump has this ridiculous habit of taking a reasonable ask, making a gigantic and unnecessary spectacle, then claiming victory to his idiotic supporters. Hell, I’m not entirely convinced he didn’t get anything beyond the 1951 treaty here.
This is not a guy or country you want to ally with long term, but the thankful news is that it seems that no matter the bluster, nothing materially will change in the short term, thus buying time to diversify.

This development is a lesson for the rest of the world. We collectively learned that the US is weak and has no bargaining power.
So it’s time to diversify full throttle and put this dead weight behind us.

I wonder who or what made him (for now) back off the cliff, Denmark pension fund selling off their Treasury securities, Europe floating the idea of excluding US companies from their market?

I’m somewhat worried about whatever concessions were made here. From what I understand, there’s going to be some deal to do with a long term lease over Greenland, which will not quell his hunger for long. As has been proved time and again, his “victories” just emboldens him further and to ask for more and more.
Perhaps this all works out and he forgets about it, but there’s still 3 more years.

He literally went Def con 3 and then had to walk back to what NATO was offering in the beginning, meanwhile pretending he won, all the while putting the world on edge!! Enough!

Stock market dropped, his friends are buying in while there’s a dip. Now that they can profit, his plans have changed.

This is too soon after the rambling harangue that was his speech at Davos to have any validity. Once the EU cancelled the trade deal and various pension funds began selling off US bonds he had to back off. There may be an agreement to put more troops at the existing US base and that’s about it. I do not believe there would be a lease agreement as I question if NATO has the authority to agree to this. I would imagine that Denmark and Greenland would need to agree , and Greenland is not doing that
TACO delivered again.

He honours no agreements. Once a large number of US boots are on the ground in Greenland he will betray Greenland and Denmark. He will use those soldiers to attack the people of Greenland, much like he is using them against the people of his own country. No one can trust a word that comes out of his mouth, he will betray anyone and everyone.

The world is being taught that the USA is a volatile and unreliable partner. China may be transactional, they honour their commitments and want to make deals. Trump has pissed away 70 years of American soft power in a matter of months, with China being the primary beneficiary.

JP Morgan had a piece on this the other day. Basically their assessment was:
The most likely outcome is a NEGOTIATED ARRANGEMENT that expands US security/eco presence in the territory and addresses US stated objectives – stronger Arctic security posture, enhanced early warning for missile defense and access to Greenland’s natural resources – while Denmark preserves sovereignty.

NYT now reporting that the “framework” involved giving US sovereignty over “small pockets” of Greenland on which to build bases.
Bad news for Canada? They’ll be demanding small pockets from our North soon?
