Like almost every winter, the air in Serbia is excessively polluted this year.
The heating season and atmospheric conditions create ideal conditions for record levels of air pollution, which claim more than 14,000 lives in Serbia every year, including the lives of newborns.
But while the population is suffocating in harmful particles, sulfur and nitrogen, the state has been months behind in publishing official reports.
Namely, if you look at the website of the Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), you will see that the last report on the state of air quality was published in 2024, and it refers to the now long-ago 2023.
According to the provisions of the current Air Protection Act, SEPA is obliged to publish an annual report on the previous year every year, no later than May 31. This means that the current report, which refers to 2024, is already almost eight months late.
This is not the first time that SEPA is late with the publication of the report, but so far it has not happened that we have to wait for the report even after the New Year – we should soon expect a review of the data for 2025, not 2024.
We can only guess what are the reasons for such an excessive delay in basic information to the public, but in a country where urgent measures are necessary to improve air quality, the lack of basic data and reports is particularly devastating.
