The Hungarian railway company Győr-Sopron-Ebenfurth (GySEV) has obtained a five-year extension of its contract for the maintenance of railway lines in Hungary from the Ministry of Construction and Transport.
Under the contract, GySEV will maintain and operate 1,195 km of railway lines for the period January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2030.
The railway lines covered by the contract include both sections managed by GySEV and lines owned by the company.
The agreement, in line with European standards for railway operating contracts, covers, among other things, the conditions for railway operating services and provisions on asset management.
Under the contract, GySEV undertakes to manage the railway sections in accordance with the requirements set out in the document. The state will reimburse the operator for justified costs that cannot be covered by revenue and will allow additional support to be accounted for in order to stimulate efficiency and profitable management.
“It is important that the old 10-year operating contract has been extended with virtually no changes. This reflects the confidence of the Hungarian state, as the beneficiary, in our company. The new five-year contract gives us predictability and allows us to plan long-term developments on the lines we operate,” said GySEV CEO Szilárd Kövesdi.
In July 2025, GySEV and Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) signed a contract for the maintenance and administration of 752 km of lines. Through this contract, GySEV took over all obligations for the operation and maintenance of railway lines in Hungary stipulated in the transfer contract. On the railway lines concerned, MÁV allowed an average of 420 trains to run daily and managed almost 10% of national rail freight traffic, thus facilitating the delivery of 754 million tonne-kilometers of freight annually for 40 railway companies.
As a result, GySEV is responsible for 1,195 km of lines in Hungary and, together with the sections in Austria, the company manages 1,261 km of lines.
