Prime Minister Mark Carney’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, resonated in Mexico, a country which, much like Canada, has also been forced to grapple with the mercurial temperament of its much larger and powerful U.S. neighbour.

Carney’s speech was “in tune with the current times,” said Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, during her morning news conference Wednesday, in response to a Davos-related question from a journalist.

“That was a very good speech by Carney, from Prime Minister Carney, I don’t know if you heard it.”

Carney said during his speech that the illusion of a rules-based international order had finally vanished and that middle-power countries faced a choice to either “compete with each other for favour or combine to create a third path.”

That speech single handedly propelled us up on the global stage. Lots of praise from both the left and right.

Mexico better be careful, they dont have the same white privilege that Canada does.

There were some very positive reactions to the speech over on r/mexico yesterday

  5. Mexico president keeps protecting the cartels saying they are not terrorist because they don’t attack the government… she is the worst!

  6. I don’t trust the Mexican president. She’s already thrown Canada under the bus to get a better deal from the USA.

  7. I wonder if he is trying to complete a union of nations. Something like Reagan claimed would be possible with an alien threat. The “New World Order,” that Only an alien threat would cause. Except the alien threat we are facing in the modern world is possibly another nation. It’s scary times.

Mexico would readily sacrifice Canada’s interests if doing so secured a better trade deal with the United States.

Mexico’s priorities are fundamentally different from Canada’s. In fact, for several years, Mexican labour costs have been roughly 25% lower than those in China. Wages in Mexico are simply not comparable to those in Canada.

  9. Mark Carney crushed it!!!! I am a proud Canadian and the orange turd is no longer relevant in our conversations with other nations. Sit down and shut up, the adults are speaking.

  10. Thèse ppl in WEF standing up for Carney doesn’t mean the future of Canada will be a positive one. Expect CDBCs, social credit score, etc.

I’m genuinely impressed with Carney’s ability to position Canada on the global stage. We’ve neglected bilateral relations with Mexico for a long time, yet here they are heaping praise on the Prime Minister of Canada and talking about wanting to ally with us more closely. Why wouldn’t we jump at that? Canada and Mexico each have what the other wants, and in some ways even needs.

I do not agree with everything the Canadian liberal or conservative government does, but I do agree we as a nation picked the best person to represent us on the world stage in this moment in history!

    Proud to be CANADIAN.

  13. That was a fantastic speech! I wish more leaders come out and not just France and Canada

  14. He said the quiet part out loud. In front of hundreds of worlds most powerful people. In front of millions more all across the globe. He has simultaneously painted a target on Canada and put us forward as a world leader in trade negotiations. The public might forget about this in a week but the “middle powers” will be reaching out to talk about trade deals and form blocks.

The leaks in American hegemony started at the first hint of absurd unjustified tariffs. This is looking like the watershed moment.

Careny and Claudia are right on point! They are far stronger together than not especially in this year when the trade policy between the the three is renegotiated

  16. We should probably be careful though because if Mexico and the US renegotiate CUSMA to exclude Canada that would t be great.

    Don is vindictive that way.

The only downside to Carney’s brilliant performance at Davos is that a jealous Trump, still smarting from missing out on his very own Nobel Peace prize, even after stopping 8 wars, including WWIII, is now threatening to take Iceland unless he is awarded Carney’s standing ovation.
