A rare pair of Roman swords has gone on display.

The spatha swords, now on show at the Corinium Museum in Cirencester, will be featured in a February episode of the BBC Two show Digging for Britain.

The artefacts form part of a hoard discovered in 2023 by amateur metal detectorist Glenn Manning during a detecting rally in the north of the Cotswolds.

Emma Stuart, director of Corinium Museum, said: “It was a real pleasure to meet the Digging for Britain team and lovely to show the swords to the presenter Alice Roberts and witness her enthusiasm for them.

“She was surprised to see how much of the metal remained under the decomposing layers.

“Appearing on Digging for Britain was a great opportunity to help to raise the profile of Corinium Museum and its collections nationally and to celebrate our local heritage.”

The only other known pair of Roman swords found in the UK is similarly rare.

Spatha were longer than the standard Roman gladius used by legionaries.

The hoard also included a copper-alloy bowl, which has incised decoration and could have been a military cooking pot or a high-status cooking and storage vessel.

Ms Stuart and Phillip Brant-Simmons, collections engagement assistant at the museum, took the swords to the Digging for Britain tent to share their story.

They were joined by Karla Graham of Historic England, which provided funding for the swords to be X-rayed to determine the processes used in their creation.

The museum objects appear in episode six of the current Digging for Britain series, which is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

Located in the centre of Cirencester, the Corinium Museum is known for its significant collection of finds from the Roman town of Corinium.

Its collections also trace the history of the wider Cotswolds from prehistoric times to the present day.

The museum is run by Freedom Leisure on behalf of Cotswold District Council.

Freedom Leisure is one of the UK’s largest not-for-profit leisure trusts, managing more than 100 facilities across England and Wales.

Visitors can now view the swords and copper-alloy bowl in person at the museum.

All episodes of Digging for Britain are currently available on BBC iPlayer.

Further details about the artefacts and the museum’s collections can be found on the Corinium Museum website, which also provides visitor information and details of current exhibitions.
