On the 28th anniversary of the second attack on the Jashari family
Every January 22, we remember this day in 1998, when the Serbian police attacked the Jashari family in Prekaz for the second time. Early that morning, for half an hour, a group of Serbian police fired a barrage of shells and automatic weapons at the houses of Shaban Jashari. Protecting their family and their homes from this criminal attack, Shaban and his son Hamza resisted with weapons from inside the houses. Their resistance turned back the Serbian police, but from the numerous bullets, two girls, Selvete and Iliriana Jashari, were injured.
The numerous videos and media photographs taken in Prekaz after this attack serve as evidence even today of what happened on January 22, 1998.
This was the second time that the Jashari family in Prekaz was the target of police action, after the first action on December 30, 1991, a date that years later would begin to be marked as the Day of Veterans of the Kosovo Liberation Army. Both in 1991 and 1998, the Jashari family resisted armed, becoming an example and symbol of resistance to the oppressive Serbian regime and the fight for the liberation of Kosovo and the freedom of the people.
A month and a half later, the Milosevic regime would execute a much more savage and extensive action against the Jashari family and the entire village of Prekaz, during which the resistance of this family and this village would reach its peak, inspiring thousands of people to join the KLA.
The history of Kosovo’s liberation is marked precisely by courageous people and families like Shaban Jashari’s family, who with such determination and awareness sacrificed themselves for freedom.
With respectful memories and deep respect for the family of Shaban Jashari from Prekazi i Poshtëm, Drenica. /Telegraph/
