Karpathos has been recognized as one of the world’s ten “remaining paradises” by news18.com, a ranking that highlights destinations travelers should experience before they are discovered by the masses.

The international news outlet curated a list of locations that remain authentic, high-quality, and untouched by overtourism. Karpathos secured the 6th spot, joined by select destinations in Spain, Italy, Greenland, Georgia, India, Chile, and the Faroe Islands.

According to the report, “Karpathos retains its authentic character, offering a refreshing experience off the beaten path. With its ruggedly beautiful beaches, imposing mountain landscapes, and picturesque villages where local customs remain vibrant, it is an ideal destination for alternative travel.”

Climbing and hiking on Greece’ Karpathos

To support this rising interest, the Municipality of Karpathos has secured regional funding to launch two major projects focused on thematic tourism: the development of new climbing sectors and an expanded network of hiking trails.

“Our goal is to establish Karpathos as a premium destination while upgrading essential infrastructure to improve the quality of life for our residents,” stated Mayor Michalis Fellouzis.

In a significant move for sustainability, the Municipality also secured €2.8 million from the Ministry of Environment and Energy for a permanent desalination plant. Once operational, it will provide 2,000 cubic meters of fresh water daily to the capital and an additional 300 cubic meters to the Aperiou community, ensuring year-round water security for the island.
