It’s sort of funny/odd that they’d rather have people believe the ship sunk due to incompetence/design flaw rather than being lost in combat.
I get that admitting a combat loss goes against their narrative and propaganda, but is that really that much worse than having people think they’re so inept that they can’t even keep their flagship afloat (which in fairness, is very believable considering how many of their subs have sunk over the years).

There were reports at the time that the survivors were held incommunicado, then broken up and hidden in various army units to conceal the scale of losses. One family member raised a huge public stink because their son was listed as “missing” when he was clearly dead.
The ship suffered a fire and probably detonations in the aft S-300 magazine and the deck even bulged upwards.
