Instead of €50 for a poster, I’d rather spend a week of my life on a Python script (Urban Poetry)

The story is classic: I wanted to freshen up the walls a bit and was looking for some minimalist decoration. I quickly found those modern posters of cities that I really liked, until I saw the price – €50 for one picture for God’s sake?!

As a proud Gorenjec, my heart sank in an instant. My subconscious immediately whispered: "Well, you can do it yourself for free." And of course, instead of paying that €50, I preferred to spend dozens of hours automating the entire process in Python. The math is clear: my time has no value as long as there is a finished product "for free".

What have I created?

The City Poetry generator was created, which draws roads and rivers in different artistic styles from OpenStreetMap data. Since I just packaged the thing into a web application, now everyone can generate their own poster:

Features for lazy people:

• 7 different themes: From "Sea view" in "Forest silence" do "Cyberpunk" in "Golden Maribor".

• A4 Format: The images are in the right ratio for printing. You just click download, transfer to the printer and have a gift for your mother/girlfriend/uncle in 10 seconds.

• Minimalism: The lettering is small and centered at the bottom so that it actually looks like art rather than a technical plan.

The application is, of course, completely free. If someone actually decorates their wall with this, be sure to send me a photo! I also added a coffee button at the bottom if anyone feels the need to support my insomnia.

Which style do you like the most? With €50 saved, I am now officially the happiest person in Gorenjska.
