Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the trilateral negotiations between Washington, Moscow and Kiev working towards an end to the Russian war in his country as constructive.
He wrote on social networks on Saturday evening that many topics were discussed at the first meeting of the two warring parties in a long time. He now expects the detailed report from the Ukrainian delegation upon their return. The next steps will be decided at the level of country leaders.
The “military personnel involved in the negotiations have created a list of topics for a possible new meeting,” he said. This could take place as early as next week if there is sufficient will, and Kiev is ready for it, he stressed.
In Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Russian and Ukrainian negotiators met around the table on an official level for the first time in months, with the United States acting as a mediator.
No results were announced after the two days of talks, but both parties to the conflict expressed satisfaction with the progress of the discussions.
Meanwhile, the war initiated by Russian President Vladimir Putin in February 2022 did not ease up: Overnight, there were again heavy Russian attacks on Ukraine, in which at least one person was killed and dozens of civilians were injured.
The Russian Foreign Ministry accused Kiev of torpedoing the peace process by shelling an ambulance in the part of the Ukrainian region of Kherson occupied by Russian military forces.
