What is MERCOSUR?

Mercosur is a South American trading bloc that emerged from Argentina–Brazil economic rapprochement in the 1980s and was formalized as a “common market” in 1991. Mercosur’s members (formally “State Parties”) are: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia and Venezuela (Venezuela is suspended).

For the common man, the idea is simple: if an EU-Mercosur agreement reduces customs duties and trade barriers, some products/imports may become cheaper and more options may appear in the market (through greater competition).​

The controversy comes from the risk that certain sectors (especially agriculture) will be put under pressure and from disputes over standards/sustainability.​

Mercosur is now important for the EU because if the US (under President Donald Trump) raises or threatens tariffs on EU imports, Europe has an interest in diversify markets and not be so dependent on exports to the US.

The EU–Mercosur deal would reduce high Mercosur tariffs on European products (eg autos/cars/pharmaceuticals), so EU firms can more easily sell there, which cushions the shocks of a trade war with the US and may reduce some costs in the economy.
