SVP wants better education. At same time

  1. SVP is the party with the least educated voters and has the most issue with facts/science (see their stance in global warming)

  2. cuts in education budget,

  3. want to reduce the information quality

My favorite take from the proposal: they want to remove parents working permit if they don’t help their kid with learning local language.

I have kids and I am from Geneva and live in Zurich: there is absolutely 0 chance I can teach Swiss German to any of them. Good luck with taking away my working permit.

Maybe Parmelin should remind SVP that German is not the only language in Switzerland.

Funnily, they don’t speak about the risk of AI and the necessity to teach critical thinking to be able to distinguish between truth and BS (probably because that would reduce their voter base).

They have the same strategy as MAGA.

Tell stupid people what they want to hear, loot them, blame the other politcal parties while making sure that their voters stay dumb, repeat.

  2. Forget SVP, that’s Swiss Trump in every way. No need to think about any proposal or initiative by those right wing idiots.

  3. Really the whole thing is just a propaganda thing. I am all in to make foreigners, especially kids learn the language, but the way SVP set this up is all about punishing people.

The schools are run and paid for by cantons. And yes the level of kids is falling. There are many factors to that such as overdependance on technologies, lack of parental education and kids who cannot speak the language properly.

  5. SVP wanting “better” education is right out of the american playbook:

    1. Claim education is bad and needs improvement
    2. Say privatization will improve education
    3. Privatize education at any chance you get
    4. Watch as education gets worse due to privatization (profit motive)
    5. Get rewarded by big donors due to their increased profits
    6. Go back to step one

  6. In Switzerland you can speak any official language, so even if you speak only french in Zurich, you still speak the language of the country.

I‘m not supporting the SVP or their initiatives, but it kind of is undeniable that there is problem of a large percentage of students not speaking the local official language at native level. This then influences the one‘s who do speak it as a native language as well (negatively one could argue). And also slows down the lessons in general.

  8. This is the most anti-Swiss proposal I read in a long time. Public schools are the bedrock of a (direct) democratic society. Our ancestors knew this, which is why public education was seen as a prerequitite.

The economic payoff of every CHF invested in education is insanely high. Our teachers are excellent and constantly improving their approach. Schools are also essential for integration of immigrant children, for public safety and social stability.

None of that means that you can just throw money at the system at it gets better. But we should look to invest more in education and find improvements that will benefit future generations.

  9. Most increase of budget went to admin. Relocating part of that to actual teachers and kids makes an improvement despite less budget possible.

  10. I don’t know where you take it from this article that they want a “better” school.

    They

    * explicitly point towards immigrant children as the major problem in education (instead of various other things like lacking budget, personell, public trust, etc)
    * want to reduce the content to the basics (calculations, reading and writing) which would omit many, necessary skills that are currently part of the educational system as well as get rid of other “non-essential” contents
    * want to remove content they call “woke” (which basically sums up anything that disagrees with their heteronormative, traditional christian world view).

Honestly, the only thing that I could even somehow, moderately support in this is the ban of cellphones. It is certainly extreme, unfeasible and unlawful but points towards an actual problem.

  11. Education is the only positive trait in this country that we are really doing right. In a country without natural resources, brain power is our only saving grace that allows to finance everything. Can we finance education more efficiently? Yes certainly. But maybe just maybe they should focus on that F-35 fighter jet fiasco that they are responsible for. Find a solution without ducking something else!

“Um dies zu verhindern, müsse die verlotterte Elite abgewählt und «entfernt» werden. «Die Schweizer Bevölkerung will eine andere Politik», ist Dettling überzeugt. «Wir müssen die Verlotterung der Schweiz stoppen.» Deshalb müsse die SVP in den Gremien vertreten sein, im Bundesrat und in den Parlamenten.”

This scares me the most. This the 101 of Populism, crazy how many morons are falling for this. Especially as the SVP is itself the biggest party of the “elites”

SVP want’s fuck all better schools. They want a dumb society they can govern like sheep.

  14. Don’t get too agitated about this. The SVP digs out the school reform topic every few years. It’s one of their standard subjects.

I doubt there’s much news in their “Positionspapier”.

Probably the usual “schools are bad because of foreigners”, “Lehrplan 21 is evil”, “let’s go back to the school system of the 50ies because this worked best”, “we need more dictations, memorization and calculations in the head”.

As always with the SVP it’s unclear how much of it they really believe to be good because they’re incompetent and how much of is deliberately trying to sabotage the system because more badly educated people means more voters for them in the future.
