President Lee Jae Myung has withdrawn the nomination of Lee Hye-hoon as planning and budget minister following controversy over several allegations.

Hong Ik-pyo, senior presidential secretary for political affairs, said Sunday in a press briefing that President Lee decided to retract the nomination after careful deliberation.

Hong said the president considered a wide range of views from across society regarding the nominee and closely assessed public sentiment after her parliamentary confirmation hearing, ultimately concluding that she did not meet the public’s expectations for the role.

He added that the president would continue pursuing inclusive appointments aimed at reaffirming the meaning and value of national unity.
