Hey everyone,

We got tired of reading all the news about abuses and scams in the rental market over the past couple of years, so we’re launching a new rent review platform for Malta and Gozo. You can find it on ikri.net.

Hopefully when it’s populated with enough reviews, anyone who wants to rent can go in it to check what past tenants have said about both the property and the landlord.

Filling a review takes about 10 minutes, and you can leave comments or post pics. We manually vet every individual review and also ask tenants to provide us with their rent agreement so we can weed out fakes and bad actors.

We also don’t allow personal identification of the landlord in the reviews, as the review is based on the address, not the actual person. We take privacy very seriously, on both sides.

BTW, we don’t just want to hear the bad stuff – landlords who put in the effort deserve to be highlighted, so if you’ve had a great experience, please also feel free to fill it in.

Thanks for reading and let us know if you have any questions or comments 🙂

  1. Good idea, but why not make it a platform for owners to advertise vacant properties, or tenants to find flatmates, alongside the reviews?

Also, have you considered how to handle a change of owner? It would be unfair if someone bought an apartment to rent out but the previous owner was bad, or vice versa it would be bad for a tenant to move into an apartment with rave reviews because the previous owner was stellar.

In fact, why shouldn’t the reviews be tied to the owner? If an owner (or worse, an ownership company) is unscrupulous, they’ll be unscrupulous across all their properties.

  2. Really appreciate this project. Transparency in the rental market is desperately needed.

That said, I do think you’ll hit some hesitation around people uploading sensitive documents like rental agreements.
