Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the U.S. can’t allow Canada to become the opening through which China pours “cheap goods” into the U.S.

The comments, on ABC’s This Week on Sunday, come a day after President Donald Trump threatened to impose 100% tariffs on all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S. if Canada makes a trade deal with China.

Trump said on social media on Saturday that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is “sorely mistaken” if he plans to allow that. “China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life.”
