I’m convinced he doesn’t want to win. This campaign is lurching from cock up to cock up

      Summary:

Rishi Sunak’s decision to skip a crucial part of the D-day commemorations in Normandy sparked outrage among Conservative grassroots members, marking a significant blunder in his faltering election campaign. His absence at the commemorations, where he was to be joined by world leaders and Keir Starmer, left many Tory members dismayed and disillusioned.

Senior members expressed shock and disappointment, with one describing Sunak’s decision as ‘extraordinary’ and ‘gobsmacking.’ Sunak attempted to mitigate the damage with an early-morning apology on Twitter and a subsequent TV interview, emphasizing that D-day commemorations should not be politicized. However, a D-day veteran, Ken Hay, 98, criticized Sunak for bailing out and letting the country down.

Opposition parties, including Labour and the Liberal Democrats, condemned Sunak’s actions, with Starmer criticizing the mismatch between Sunak’s actions and his pledge to introduce mandatory national service, and Davey accusing Sunak of bringing shame to the office of prime minister.

The anger over Sunak’s absence effectively dissolved any short-lived Tory momentum following the first head-to-head TV debate with Starmer and the initial boost from Farage’s decision to take over Reform UK’s campaign.

    3. Narendra Modi’s loss of his majority this week likely means that Sunak can’t leverage BJP donor funding for the Tory campaign, that, had Modi romped to a easy majority as analysts had predicted, would have meant big donors like Adani would have alot spare to prop up the Tories. Instead, those funds are likely being used to pay off every one of Chandrababu Naidu’s bigwigs in Telangana to keep the BJP’s coalition onside.

Notice how quickly Tory funding has come to a grinding halt. The Sunak “plan” was quite possibly to deploy big money around this point in the campaign. You now have the absurd situation where campaign funding limits were raised at the behest of the Conservatives, but backers of the Tories’ sister party in the East aren’t willing or able to stump up, such that Labour could quite possibly outspend them.

Sunak’s father-in-law’s company is actually listed on the NYSE (and not just on the BSE in India) – given the much greater choice of allocations in the US market, unlike the big Indian conglomerates like Reliance and Adani’s outfit (who have domestic fund managers who *have* to include them in their portfolio), he can’t just spray funds at his son-in-law without looking like a moron to the investor base. He’s also probably wise enough not to chuck money at an injured horse.

Yeah, he was a bit shitty. I’m just surprised anyone is left to be surprised, despite all the many, many opportunities the Tories gave us to be disgusted by them.

Anyone else who genuinely hates the tory party actually a little uncomfortable with this particular manufactured outrage?
