That looks huge. Interesting to see how many turn up to the right wing march.

I’m surprised Mussolini Minns allowed a protest!

Fantastic to see. Would have been there had it not coincided with bubs nap time but Yabun fest has been great as well

Just got home after driving through the tail end of this. Police barricades are still up and I got to take a nice and leisurely tour through the back streets of Chippendale and Surry Hills with about 100+ other cars

We’re one of the only countries that has their ‘national day’ on the day of settlement – most countries have it as their day of independence/decolonisation. It also doesn’t unite us anymore, it’s diving us – if it upsets this many people we should just change it. The fact we’re stubborn about it, despite the good it would do to show our indigenous communities that we hear them and respect them, is not a good look for Australia, it’s pretty embarrassing tbh.
Hopefully they change it, March 3rd would be a good alternative, that’s our equivalent to an Independence day.

I wish they’d just change the day already so we can have a day to celebrate Australia without all this.

What’s the point of this protest really? I’ve always wondered if they successfully change the date what would they change it to? What does this actually look like other than showing face for invisible points?
Every day if our calendar year probably has some atrocity or injustice done to the Aboriginal people, so changing it from today to any other day won’t work, because then there will be protests about it being on that day.
Even though the turnout above is huge “changing the date” is as unpopular as it’s ever been.
It’s frigging Australia Day just enjoy it for once!

That’s why I’m avoiding the city today.

So sad to see how divided our country is. Watching what’s happening abroad, I guess it’s just the way the world is now.

So much ignorance in these comments lol at the end of it all it really isn’t difficult to just change the date

An impressive turnout.
I watched as they left hyde park. There was so many people it took them 10 minutes before they all filtered out.

I have an idea to replace Australia Day. Why don’t we become a republic (get rid of the British monarchy) and celebrate it?

I say make 26 Jan Survival Day, and have muted ceremonies dictated by Aboriginal groups (but still a public holiday).
Then have Australia Day on 1 Jan, the date when ‘Australia’ was actually founded (yes I know this is NYD, so have an extra public holiday on 2 Jan (or the next weekday).
So we end up with an extra public holiday – win!

I almost asked what about, then I realized it’s 3pm and I’m still in bed.

I am sure as hell never going to any Aussie Day. And haven’t done for like a decade or so. I don’t know it just feels gross celebrating on a day that it not a celebration for those who natively here well before us.
