A survivor was brought to Malta after a shipwreck in the central Mediterranean, with 50 others feared dead, Alarm Phone reported on Sunday.

The NGO, which operates a hotline for people crossing the Mediterranean in a bid to reach Europe, said that the group had left Tunisia and spent 24 hours in the water.

The survivor who was brought to Malta said that 50 others did not survive the crossing: Alarm Phone’s statement does not specify whether he was the only survivor.

The Maltese authorities are yet to issue a statement on the incident.

Days earlier, on 20 January Alarm Phone had reported that 51 lives were at risk in the central Mediterranean after fleeing Tunisia by boat in rough weather. On 23 January, it said that at least three boats had left Tunisia and 150 people were unaccounted for.

It is not clear, however, whether the shipwrecked boat was one of the vessels mentioned by the NGO.
