VANCOUVER Wash. (KPTV) – Friends of Corey Jones, the man shot outside a sports bar earlier this month, held a car show vigil in his honor Sunday afternoon. Money raised from the show will go directly to Jones’ family, according to one of the event organizers.
Jones, a husband, father and grandfather, was shot and killed outside of Off-Ramp Sports Bar in the early morning hours of Jan. 3.
Crowds of people and their cars showed up to the Falk Road Bi-Mart parking lot on Sunday afternoon to honor Jones. He was a car enthusiast and shared the interest with his children, according to longtime family friend Tiffaney West.
The suspect in a deadly Vancouver sports bar shooting made his first court appearance on Monday.
West, who helped organize the vigil, told FOX 12 that all the money raised from the show will go directly to Jones’ family.
“I just feel that the kids really need to know that there’s still good in the world,” West said. “And that people love and care about their dad as much as they did.”
West said she had been friends with Jones and his wife for 18 years. In addition to Jones’ love of cars, West wants others to remember his goofy sense of humor and profound sense of generosity.
“He’s literally somebody that I have physically seen take his shirt off of his own body and give to somebody that needed it more,” West said.
And even those who knew Jones for a short time said they will remember his outgoing personality.
“I think he could get along with anybody. I mean, just the nicest guy. I liked him as soon as I met him,” said Mark Stackhouse, who met Jones at a car event last summer.
Stackhouse and his sister both participated in Sunday’s car show. Dozens of other participants showed up with their cars, each one there to support Jones’ family.
The man accused of shooting Jones, Jared Taylor, turned himself in on Jan. 4 and is being held at the Clark County Jail. He has been charged with second-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. He is due back in court on Feb. 12.
