From the speech of candidate Shpetim Tim Qorraj at the opening of the campaign to be elected to the New York State Assembly
Good day everyone,
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being here today. Thank you to my family, friends, my campaign team, our community leaders, our neighbors, and everyone who came to support this moment. Your presence means more to me than words can explain.
Today is not just a day for a campaign. Today is about hope, opportunity, and the belief that ordinary people can do extraordinary things when we work together.
My name is Tim Qorraj, and I am a candidate for your next member of the New York State Assembly for the 64th district.
For those of you who don’t know me, I was born in Kosovo, in a small village surrounded by wonderful people.
I grew up in difficult times, in a country torn apart by war. But even in those difficult days, I grew up with strong values like respect, kindness, hard work, and love for family and community.
At just 13 years old, I lost my father during the war. He was a freedom fighter and commander, fighting for his people and land for freedom and democracy.
Losing my father at a young age was hard, but instead of breaking me, it made me stronger. It taught me that life is precious and that we should use our time to do something important. In 2011, I came to the United States with a dream, like many immigrants before me. I came with hope, no money, but with strong values and a strong will to work. When I first came to America, I started in Bar Harbor, Maine, a great state with wonderful people, and it was there that I found love. I met my wife, Kathleen, a daughter of the US Marines and a Vietnam veteran. Together with my wife, we built a beautiful family here on Staten Island. We are blessed with two wonderful sons, Ronan and Bren. Every day, when I look at them, I am reminded of why I work hard and why I run, to give them and all our children a better future. My heart has always been with the community. On Staten Island, especially within the Albanian community and beyond, I have worked on many events, brought people together, supported families, and built bridges between cultures, leaders, and neighbors. I believe deeply in unity. I believe that when we stand together, we are stronger. So why am I running? I am running because working families deserve a strong voice. I am running because our neighbors deserve to feel safe in their homes. • Our law enforcement needs our support. They need more personnel and better tools to keep our communities safe, and I will fight and advocate for them. I am running because our children deserve great schools. Our schools need more staff, more space, and stronger security measures, including more school security officers. I will fight for that. I am running because small businesses deserve support. And I am running because our transportation, education, and healthcare systems need to work for people.
Staten Island has the slowest public transportation and some of the most expensive fares. I will fight for better public transportation that is faster, more reliable, and more affordable.
Sea wall project
We must move forward with the seawall project to protect our neighborhoods. Our families deserve to feel safe, and we cannot allow another disaster like Hurricane Sandy to destroy our homes, families, and property again. I will fight to make this a reality.
I want to be the kind of leader who listens, who walks the streets of the district and knows people by name.
A leader who works with everyone, regardless of party, to achieve real results.
The 64th Assembly District is full of hardworking people, immigrants, working families, seniors, veterans, and young professionals, all with their own dreams.
You deserve a member of the assembly who understands the meaning of hard work, because nothing was given to me, who knows what it means to start from nothing, and who has never forgotten his origins.
This campaign is not about me, it’s about us. It’s about our families. Our children. Our future. I ask you today: support the campaign that will bring real change to our community. Volunteer. Donate. Tell your family and friends who live in your neighborhood to vote for someone who cares about the well-being of our community. Together, we can build a safer, stronger community. Together, we can create opportunity. Together, we can make real change. Thank you for believing in me. Thank you for believing in us. And let’s get to work.
God bless the United States of America.
God bless our great city. /Telegraph/
