Fans of My Chemical Romance are trying to discern the meaning behind the band’s latest social media post.
The influential rock group shared a mysterious post on Instagram Sunday, Jan. 25, the same day that My Chemical Romance kicked off their 2026 world tour.
The video post, which doesn’t have any sound, contains a flickering image of the word ”PHANTOM” in neon green letters. Meanwhile, the post’s caption reads, “A GAME YOU WILL PLAY.”
The post comes as MCR kicked off the band’s “The Black Parade” tour on Sunday after having to cancel the original opening show in Bogotá, Colombia last week “due to reasons beyond the control of ourselves, the promoter, or the venue,” the band wrote on Instagram on Jan. 9.
The post not appear to reference the ongoing tour, nor does it fit into the aesthetic design of the band’s recent activity.
MCR fans were left feeling an overwhelming sense of excitement, anticipation and curiosity from the cryptic post. Many speculated that the band is hinting at new music.
Top comments included “ready to play,” “NEW ALBUMMMM” and “good mother freaking morning to you too MCR!”
The band last released the one-off single “The Foundations Of Decay” in 2022, which itself was their first new material in eight years, according to NME. Meanwhile MCR’s last full-length album, “Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys,” came out in 2010. Despite entering recording sessions for a fifth album in 2011, the project never materialized and the group disbanded in 2013.
Since returning in 2019, there have been occasional new music teases, such as in 2023 when rumors of a new album had to be debunked after an associate of the band shared a cryptic post. In September 2025, fans thought they had picked up on clues about new music from an on-stage prop clock that was ticking down to Dec. 12. However, the date passed without any news, NME reported.
Guitarist Frank Iero told the news outlet in February 2025, “When that stuff — if that stuff were to happen, we will tell you. We will tell you in the way we want to tell you.”
