WACO, Texas (KWTX) – The Waco Fire Department is responding to calls despite challenging icy road conditions, using upgraded tire chain technology to maintain safe response times during the current winter weather.
Fire Captain Chris Littleton said the icy road conditions pose a challenge, but the department learned valuable lessons from the 2021 winter storm that helped them prepare for this weather event.
“We’ve learned a lot from 2021,” Littleton said.
Equipment upgrades improve response capabilities
Older Waco fire trucks use traditional tire chains for traction on icy roads. However, the department’s newer vehicles feature an advanced chain system that spins underneath the tires to provide traction when roads become slippery.
“Before with the regular chains, we would have problems with the chains coming off. We were limited to speed, so when we got to a road that wasn’t iced over, it wasn’t hazardous, we’re still limited to 25 miles an hour due to the chains,” Littleton said.
The new chain technology can be turned on and off as needed, allowing crews to respond more quickly when road conditions improve.
“These we can turn on and off, so if we get on a clear road, we can turn them off and respond quicker,” Littleton said.
Department prepared for winter conditions
Littleton said residents should not worry about emergency response capabilities during the winter storm. The new chain systems work effectively in ice and up to six inches of snow.
“We’re going to be able to respond no matter what. These chains work in ice and up to six inches of snow so I think we’re going to be covered for this weather pattern,” Littleton said.
