  1. Some 40,000 Iraqi soldiers died in Desert Storm. 1,400 Kuwaitis died as did 300 Coalition soldiers. At a conservative estimate, Hussein’s postwar repressions killed 30,000 Kurdish and Shi’ite civilians in the North and South of his country. Some estimates go up to 100,000.

5,000 Iraqi soldiers and civilians died in the initial 2003 invasion, against 172 US-UK dead. These numbers skyrocketed in the civil war and insurgency from 2003 to 2011. Anywhere between 150,000 and 200,000 Iraqis died in these eight years. These numbers include 120,000 civilians, of which the majority died by insurgents, militias, and terrorist activity. Roughly 27,000 insurgents and 18,000 Iraqi Security Force personnel died in this phase. So did 4,500 Americans.

The war against ISIL has also caused catastrophic losses. Over 20,000 Iraqi troops, police and militia have been killed, as have 2,000 Kurdish Peshmerga fighters. Between 50,000 and 70,000 ISIL militants have died. 70,000 civilians have died.

Another 9,000 have died since 2017.

  2. Second photo of the F-18 is an incredibly photo. If I was that pilot I would have that framed in every room of my house.

  3. Some of the pictures reminded me that you may not be able Rambo your way through war anymore nowadays due to advances in drone tech.

Looks like our NATO allies were very much NOT avoiding the front lines. RIP to all who died for W’s delusions.

I remember being a Cub Scout in the early 90’s and one of the leaders had not long finished his tour in this war in the British Army. We were playing rounders and this guy was holding the short bat whilst telling us the rules. A rat ran out across a table to his side, in a split second it was crushed under the bat. I’ve never seen such quick reactions, which I suspect was from being in the conflict and running on adrenaline for so long!

  6. Follow up to #13 – the burning guy rolling out of the tank – because I was curious enough to look it up.

This was the Basra Prison Incident in 2005. A successful mission to rescue 2 captured SAS members.

During the mission “a crowd gathered and began throwing stones and molotov cocktails at the Warrior infantry fighting vehicles, setting at least one ablaze. Three British soldiers were injured and, according to some reports, two demonstrators were killed.”

A follow up interview in 2013 shows the scaring to the man in the photo.

“As a private with the Staffordshire Regiment, Karl, 26, suffered severe burns to his hands, legs, arms and face in the bombing in 2005 in Iraq. His injuries were so bad he had to painstakingly learn to walk again.”

Photos by Bryan Adams, the singer. You know, Summer of ‘69, straight from the heart, everything I do I do it for you.

He now seems to be a marathon runner and motivational speaker. Because of course he is.

  7. I strongly suggest to anyone interested in the recent history of Iraq and the invasion of Iraq to listen to the Blowback podcast.
