Sunfire Secures 200 MW Electrolyzer Orders in Spain

The German electrolysis specialist will deliver two 100 MW plants for large scale hydrogen projects in Cartagena and Muskiz.

Dresden, January 27, 2026 – Sunfire, a leading global electrolysis company, will supply two 100 megawatt (MW) electrolyzers for renewable hydrogen projects in Spain. The first project, led by Repsol – Spain’s largest hydrogen producer – and Enagás Renovable, will install a 100 MW electrolyzer near Repsol’s industrial complex in Cartagena. The second 100 MW plant will be located at Petronor’s refinery in Muskiz (Bilbao), which is owned by Repsol and Kutxabank.

Nils Aldag, CEO of Sunfire, states:

Spain offers strong conditions for green hydrogen, and we recognized this potential early on.

”We are proud that Repsol is once again choosing our proven pressurized alkaline technology to produce renewable hydrogen at scale. Together, we are advancing Spain’s leading role in green hydrogen.”

For each of the two 100 MW projects, Sunfire will deliver ten of its proven pressurized alkaline electrolyzer modules, each with a 10 MW capacity. The plants will be integrated into existing refinery operations and become part of the regional hydrogen infrastructure. Once commissioned in 2029, each 100 MW plant will produce up to 15,000 tons of hydrogen annually using renewable electricity. The renewable hydrogen will be supplied to Repsol’s industrial complexes to manufacture essential fuels with a significantly lower carbon footprint. Each project is expected to avoid up to 167,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.
Sunfire has already delivered a 10 MW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer to Basque Hydrogen, a project of Petronor, EVE and Enagas Renovable in Spain, now being installed at the Port of Bilbao. The 200 MW follow-up order underscores the Sunfire’s reliability, scalability, and execution strength. Beyond its partnership with Repsol, Sunfire holds additional strong industrial references, including a 100 MW order from RWE in Lingen, Germany.

Partnerships Support Spain’s 2030 Electrolysis Target

The projects represent a significant step forward in Repsol’s roadmap to replace conventional hydrogen with renewable hydrogen across its industrial sites. At the same time, they will contribute to Spain’s decarbonization targets by 2030 and to reinforce the development of the renewable hydrogen market, reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels and reinforcing energy security.
