Mostly because we lose autonomy over our currency which as an export heavy nation is useful to control. Control export prices. Only taking Sweden into account for interest rates.
Softening shocks from economic crisis in Europe. The volatility will exist either way since its reacting to risks in the world. Instead of currency volatility you would get volatility in unemployment/layoffs, wage decreases and lower growth.
We could get deeper integration and probably cheaper interest rates over the long time. Some might find it easier to invest and not have to deal with conversions. I’m not sure what real problems the Euro would be solving.
If the other EU countries worked more like Sweden in terms of institutions, welfare and fiscal discipline it would make more sense to me. Like sharing currency with Norway, Denmark, Finland, Germany and the Netherlands would make sense too me since our countries work similar.

Aren’t there massive benefits in keeping your own currency? Increased exports in recession due to a weaker currency, and the possibility to print your own money. In good times it’s cheaper to go abroad.

I do not think it will happen in sweden anytime soon. Partly because there was a vote and the euro lost, but I think mainly due to the euro crisis still being in fresh memory for a lot of people. There is simply very little trust that some of the countries within the euro zone can handle their economy well enough, which can impact all other countries with the euro. It should also be stated that sweden made it through the crisis relativity well and the common sentiment is that it’s largely due to having our own currency. Might be that it will actually be more beneficial to adopt the euro, but the people are not convinced at least.

Sweden should adopt the euro because they signed a piece of paper that said that they should adopt the euro.
Euro has advantages and disadvantages. The widespread use of euro in the European Union brings advantages to all the Union.
The countries who don’t adopt the euro but are inside the common market are essentially freeriding.
The only one who doesn’t is Denmark since they have their currency tied to the Euro. They are the only ones with an opt out. But they should adopt the euro because what they are doing with their currency is objectively dumb

People will say this is impossible. But I also remember very clearly when the Swedes were saying that neutrality was a core value and NATO a nonstarter… Months later the entire population or pretty much wanted to join.
We Europeans are under a pincer attack and I don’t think our constant hesitations will help when the times only ask for greater European independence through integration. I say ‘Vive la Suède, vive l’Europe !’ 🇨🇵🇪🇺👍🇸🇪🇪🇺

i can’t think to anything better introduced by EU than Euro… I could never go back to 25y ago.
Any European nation keeping the local currency doesn’t understand the big added value of having a stable and unique currency in the entire union.

tbh i hope not. i remember when we got the euro in germany, we knew everything would be “halfed”, but only our income halfed. the prices of things never halfed, they just changed the DM to Euro and it became twice expensive.

In my opinion, there is a lot of national pride involved here. When the people decide, it is usually not based on a comprehensive weighing of the individual pros and cons. It is more about gut feeling.
Personally, I don’t really care how long it takes the Swedes to decide. That is their sovereign decision.

As a quick stopgap Sweden could just join ERM II like Denmark to stop any volatility.
I know joining is part of the Euro pathway but if the Euro is still too unpalatable for Swedes it’s a compromise.

Yes if they do it, it will no longer be cheaper for Norwegians along the border to shop in Sweden.

Many economists and many businesses has started calling for Euro adoption as SEK is considered too volatile in the global environment.
