The accident locals in the North have warned about as inevitable has now happened. The outcry to junk driving licence mutual validity treaties with asian countries or requiring additional winter courses will now intensify. And despite bureaucrats claiming there is no room for such measures, they will come. Maybe in the form of banning the renting or loaning of cars to drivers who lack the winter course. In the meantime we can only keep spreading the word, if you have no experience on pure snow or ice, don’t drive while you’re here. Most people who need to hear this probably don’t inform themselves in this sub, but there are people here affiliated with travel who should help spread the word.

The driver from Indonesia killed 2 local women, a third is fighting for her life in the hospital.

How awfull. All tourists should be forced to watch a video on how to drive safe and take a short written test on general rules for winter driving to be allowed to drive here in winter.

Doesent have to be annything big either like just a short 10 question test on:

    Stopping distance.
    Alcohol limits.
How to straighten out a slide.
    Sticking to your lane.
Correct way to use driving light, emergency lights.
How to let someone pass in a safe manner.
What to keep in the car in case of emergency, blankets, water, food, shovel, snowchains, etc.

  3. I’m Greek and I grew up in Athens, where I saw almost zero snow for my entire life, let alone drive in cold conditions. I’ve lived in Norway for the last 15 years. I didn’t need to take any driving lessons or be instructed how to drive on icy roads because I have common sense. I have had zero issues driving in heavy snow or storm either. It’s not lessons these people need, it’s that they have zero respect that’s the problem.

    …. That’s the rental companies policy ?

I mentioned last time this came up their return likely outweighs the loss with damages.

Now there’s deaths, they need to be informed.
