I knew to film because it happens every time I happen to be here around 5pm. You can clearly see the man go green and the lady start walking, had i started walking when it turned green I’m possibly getting it by a bus.

I know it’s tight and they may have only just ran the light but why is that the norm for a public service?

Also, because they know they’re going through the red they move with more speed, increasing the risk.

Is it really worth putting people at risk both pedestrians as passengers, just to get to the next stop on time?

  1. My local buses do this near the station because the light lengths and the cycle times of the lights for the diagonal crossing means that usually only one bus can get out for a right hand turn.

This would mean only 1 bus gets out every 1m 30s which in turn added up to it taking over 10 minutes for them to get the whole fleet out every 40 minutes.

The lights need to be adjusted to suit.

  2. To quote a cop after one pulled out on me without indicating,

    “They don’t get fined”.

That’s all he’d say, but it seems like they get some kind of unofficial exemption.

  3. As a bus driver for council this pisses me off I just don’t understand why you have to do that and risk injuring or killing somebody. I do notice that being on the road a lot there are red light runners everywhere all members of the public integer elderly and young

  4. The are shocking in the city. Flat out endanger innocent pedestrians lives. I see it everyday.

They are generally assholes not paying any attention, or just not caring.

Can’t count how many times one has just pulled out in front of me on a roundabout. I get it I’d be annoyed if I had to drive around and deal with fuckwits all day, but doesn’t make it ok to disobey traffic rules.

  6. Been happening there for as long as I can remember. 20 odd years ago you were lucky to get a bus out of the bus station before the lights changed.

  7. They need to meet their KPIs for reliability but yeh no excuse and the root cause should be addressed here.

  8. Did the driver go through a red light though? What I see is the bus crossed the stop line several seconds before the pedestrian light went green. It happens a lot when drivers enter the intersection when the light only just goes from green to amber and it has gone red by the time the bus has cleared the intersection. I agree though that buses or any vehicle running a red light for that matter is not OK however part of the issue is the poor traffic light timings.

  9. This happens without fail on the Edward/Turbot intersection every day in peak times. And then the buses get caught in the intersection because it was never clear to fucking enter and it blocks traffic.

My record was being stuck at the front of those lights for 25 consecutive light changes because of BCC drivers doing this shit.

So, at this specific intersection, buses have their own special light that comes on. It will have the letter B in orange, and that is their cue to go.

So they are not actually running the red light, just waiting their turn like everyone else.

I have wondered this question before myself, so I got curious and had a look at the traffic lights there. Next time your in the area, go have a look.

And to be fair to them, I don’t think it is just the one light, I don’t think it changes colours or gives indication of when the light will change, which could be the reason for the above.
