>Georgian Dream regime has proposed legislative amendments that would introduce criminal liability – including prison sentences of up to six years – for receiving foreign grants without prior government approval. The proposed changes would apply not only to organisations but also explicitly to private individuals.
>
>Presenting the initiative, Georgian Dream MP Irakli Kirtskhalia said that if a branch, representative office, or subdivision of a non-resident legal entity receives a grant-including from the legal entity of which it is a branch-it would be required to obtain prior consent from the Georgian government.
>
>The draft legislation also significantly broadens the definition of a “grant.” Under the proposed amendments, a grant would be defined as any funds or in-kind resources transferred by any person to any other person if those resources are used – or could potentially be used – with the intent or belief that they influence the Georgian authorities or any segment of society, or support activities aimed at shaping, pursuing, or changing Georgia’s domestic policy.
>
>In addition, amendments to the Criminal Code would introduce criminal penalties for violations of the rules established under the law on grants. According to Kirtskhalia, such violations could result in a fine, between 300 and 500 hours of community service, or imprisonment for up to six years, signaling furthering of the regime’s repression on the Georgian civil society.

I remember all the rusbots in here two years ago “but what’s wrong with asking all those corrupt NGOs for a little transparency?!”
It was always going to be like this. You can do business in Georgia if the clan lets you/likes you/gets paid by you. We’ve become a clan state and we’ll be like this for the foreseeable future
