Appropros of nothing really, certainly not the four accidents on the northside yesterday afternoon that turned the entire northbound road network into a parking lot until at least 8pm, and definately not the arsebiscuit that tried to bully his way into a gap that was physically smaller than his car despite never being clear of my vehicle and after I'd already let someone else in.

Fairly sure this must be an outdated image or something. Doesnt seem to reference coming to a screaming stop at the end of the merge lane, and I thought that was a legal requirement now?

I was JUST talking to a mate about the difference between merging on marked v unmarked lanes yesterday!!!

I have also noticed many of the lanes with dotted lines in scenario 1 have been painted over and are now scenario 2.

Just had some nut come screaming up to the end the merge lane to push between me (last car, no one behind me) and the car in front of me. I realised too late what was happening and she was blocked and lost. Her. Shit at me because she couldn’t get one car ahead.

They need to change the signage to something the average ahole can understand. Instead of merge when there’s no ROW maybe call it a Yield or something?

AND MERGE AT THE END PEOPLE, DONT JUMP ACROSS EARLY AND BLOCK BOTH LANES!

Honourable mention to the arseholes who merge *off* the motorway, onto an *on* ramp to get 5 cars ahead in traffic.

  7. Option 1 creates this weird rivalry between lanes when merging that increases accidents, but Option 2 makes both lanes viable and it just works. I wish it was Option 2 everywhere!

  8. On paper, that’s the rule. In practise, it’s advisable to give way to car in the next lane that’s ahead of you. It’s good courtesy and (most times) keeps things flowing.

  9. Let’s also note that leaving an adequate space between cars allows for smooth merging and reduces accidents.

Also, don’t be a dick and speed up to prevent someone merging in front of you. It’s not a personal challenge, assholes, we all gotta merge some time and less accidents and road rage makes for better driving.

  10. Hmm that’s interesting. I wasn’t aware of the difference. I always thought it was just the car in front (measured by nose vs nose) has right of way, so if they’re ahead of you in the lane that ends then you need to brake to let them into your lane that continues, or if their nose is behind yours then you just keep going and it’s up to them to brake and merge behind you.

  11. If people in either situation just simply respected those ahead of them on either side and zipper merged without being assholes about it all, we’d all be a lot happier.

  12. And for those occasions where a single lane splits into two lanes then immediately merges back into one, if everyone can stop being a fucken dickhead and using it a chance to move up one place in the queue that would also be nice

If the person in the merging lane is in front of me, I’ll always give way. Fuck the dotted lines – I opt for courtesy and crash avoidance.

  14. I get the rule, and I think it works… until it doesn’t, more often then not (in situation 1) there is a lot more than 1 yellow car… and if you are going to give way to every vehicle in the right hand land (which could be a neverending stream), then you might as well put the car in park and go grab some lunch while traffic backs up behind you (or worse slams into you because they’re not expecting you to come to a full stop while you wait for the lane to be empty).

Thankfully there seems to be an unwritten rule that we merge like a zipper… otherwise it’d be carnage.

  15. I assumed this road rule is for all of Aus. Having moved from QLD I’m affraid I might be doing it wrong in my new state. I’ve Learnt in NSW you don’t need to leave 4 sec gap when it rains as per QLD, but rather 3 sec. But in my experience in SYD it is only 0.3sec in reality

Sometimes when I’m driving with my dad he will actively block someone from merging into the lane from the left. Really pisses me off even if he is technically following the road rules. Really not hard just to back off a bit and let someone in – people do it for me all the time and I feel an obligation to pay it forward when I can.

We have the btm one predominantly in NSW: where no one gives way. And arseholes race up the edge and bargearse their way giving the finger. Every. Damn. Time.

  18. I had an unmarked cop pull me over to chew my ear for not giving way to his ending lane for scenario 1. Good to know he had no legal basis for throwing a tantrum.
