Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian warned of a “firm and decisive response” if the country is attacked. He added that Iran cannot be “forced” into talks through threats.

The arrival of US naval forces in the Middle East has sparked fresh concerns about a direct clash with Iran. Tehran has warned it would respond with missile strikes on US bases, ships and allies, including Israel, if an attack takes place.

Iran ‘seriously’ talking to US, says Trump

Trump confirmed that discussions between the two sides are underway, while keeping the possibility of military action in view.

Washington has deployed warships led by the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier off Iran’s coast. The move came after Trump’s warning of intervention after Iran’s deadly crackdown on anti-government protests.

Iran’s President issues fresh warning amid tensions

Pezeshkian said on Saturday that a bigger conflict would harm both Iran and the United States.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has never sought, and in no way seeks, war, and it is firmly convinced that a war would be in the interest of neither Iran, nor the United States, nor the region,” he said during a call with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, according to the Iranian presidency.

Iranian army chief Amir Hatami also warned the United States and Israel against any strike, saying his forces were “at full defensive and military readiness”.

“If the enemy makes a mistake, without a doubt it will endanger its own security, the security of the region, and the security of the Zionist regime,” Hatami said, as reported by state news agency IRNA.

What led to blast in Iran port city amid Washington-Tehran tensions?

An explosion reported on Saturday at a residential building in the southern Iranian city of Bandar Abbas, on the Gulf coast, was caused by a gas leak, according to the local fire chief.

Other incidents were reported in different parts of the country on Saturday. Media outlets said these were not linked to any attack or sabotage, even as tensions remained high following Trump’s renewed threats of military action.

US-Iran tensions

Tensions between Washington and Tehran have increased since Trump ordered a US aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East and warned of possible action against Iran. His stated reasons have shifted from seeking punishment for Iran’s leadership over the crackdown on protests to pushing for a new nuclear deal.

On Friday, Trump repeated his claim that he persuaded Iran’s leaders to stop mass executions of demonstrators. He said he believes Tehran is interested in reaching a deal to avoid future strikes.

Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said earlier that Iran is open to nuclear talks. He added that the country’s missiles and defence “will never be negotiated”.

Iran protests

Iran has accused the United States and Israel of being behind the protests that began in late December over economic concerns and peaked on January 8 and 9. Authorities said the two countries turned peaceful demonstrations into what they called a “terrorist operation” and “riots”.

The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) said it has confirmed 6,563 deaths during the protests. This includes 6,170 protesters and 124 children. The group said the internet limits imposed on January 8 continue to restrict the flow of information from inside the country.
