Severe weather has been affecting large parts of Greece since Saturday night, including the greater Athens area, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds, with the risk of localized hail.

According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY), adverse weather conditions are expected to continue on Sunday across most of the country. Rainfall is forecast to be both intense and long-lasting, accompanied by thunderstorms.

Localized hailstorms are possible, while snowfall is expected in mountainous areas of the mainland and in northern semi-mountainous regions. From early Sunday afternoon, snowfall may also occur at lower altitudes in eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

The greater Athens area experienced the first wave of bad weather early Sunday morning. Authorities report no significant problems so far, and conditions elsewhere in the country remain under control. A second wave of severe weather is forecast for the afternoon hours.

The weather system is expected to move eastward later, affecting the Dodecanese and Crete through Monday.

The Civil Protection Authority has issued a “Red Code” alert for seven regions nationwide, indicating a high level of risk. Athens has been placed under a lower-tier orange alert.

Precautionary emergency messages via the 112 system were sent late Saturday to residents in the Peloponnese, Achaia, Ilia, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Thessaly, Imathia and Pieria, urging them to limit travel and follow official guidance.
