Note that this is talking about one specific development in Brunswick, which is very different to the huge towers in Richmond/Collingwood, Flemington/North Melbourne, etc.
It really needs to be considered case by case.
The stuff they’re building as part of the new builds is of the right scale to provide sustainable social housing.
The problem, of course, is that a lot of it is being contracted out (or outright handed over, leasehold) to private companies. The arrangements they’re entering into are a mixed bag and so will the results, but there’s just no logical reason to think this will improve how the properties are maintained or tenants are treated. “Social housing” is not the same thing as public housing.
