Kinda funny how baseball is huge in countries like Cuba and Venezuela with their anti-American governments.

Might be outdated, but didn’t china used to be table tennis?
Edit: Ok I looked it up. Apparently Table tennis is the most “amateur recreational sport” according to one Wikipedia, but I saw a few other lists that mentioned both Basketball and Badminton alot. No idea what metric this map uses though.

Most popular by what metric? I’d guess this “most watched on TV”, rather than “most played”. And I’m guessing it refers to TV internet as that’s much easier to gather data on.
It would be nice if the map clarified that though.

Interesting to see sports thought of as very American really popular in Asia. I remember hearing that baseball was extremely popular in Japan but it surprises me basketball is so popular in China

I love how basketball is the most popular sport in the Philippines, a country that consistently ranks in the top 5 for shortest people

Who picks these colors? I shouldn’t have to be a Pantone expert to understand a map. Have you heard of hatching?

Table tennis is more popular than basketball in China, basketball should only be Lithuania and Philippines
Also I believe the Wikipedia version of this map has skiing for Austria

YES! Finally, Canada isn’t that only weird lonely kid with an accent in the school yard! We have friends now!
Suomalaiset and Latvieši we’ll see you at the rink! We’re on beers! 🥰
That in turn lists a few ‘sources’. but when you drill into it, they have just copied the list from the [Babbel website](https://www.babbel.com/en/magazine/most-popular-sports-by-country). As best as I can tell, the Babbel website exists entirely as an advertising scheme for Babbel language learning software.
Babbel doesn’t even pretend to list any sources, its just “we did our best to find the most popular sports in every country”. By “we”, that seems to specifically mean [Thomas Moore Devlin](https://www.babbel.com/en/magazine/contributors/thomas-moore-devlin), who “studied linguistics in college, and also has a background in English literature”.
So that is the source, most popular sports according to Thomas the English Lit marketing guy.

Ironic that cricket is more popular in South Asia than it’s home country (England)

They don’t call football (soccer) the most beautiful game in the world for no reason.

Oh. This map once again. The one that is so badly made that puts different sports under the same name. I thought it was my turn to post it in February.

FYI, here is the ‘source’ of this information.
The map is just a copy of the [World Population Review website](https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/most-popular-sport-by-country), which, by the way, has a more attractive map.
