As international travel continues to pass through Malta every day, authorities and NGOs worldwide are stressing the importance of public awareness in the fight against human trafficking.
Human trafficking involves a person being controlled or coerced into providing labour or sexual services for the benefit of others. Victims are often transported to unfamiliar locations, isolated from support networks and unable to seek help openly.
Airports are recognised worldwide as key transit hubs for trafficking activity, and Malta International Airport is no exception, given its role as a gateway between Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
One simple but powerful tool that travellers and airport visitors should be aware of is a discreet hand signal used by victims who may be travelling under duress. The signal begins with an open hand held up, the thumb tucked into the palm, followed by the fingers folding down over the thumb.
This gesture is designed to be subtle, allowing a person to signal distress without alerting the individual controlling them. Anyone who recognises this sign is encouraged to immediately alert authorities by contacting the police or airport security, or by calling the emergency number 112.
The hand signal has already been recognised by more than 40 organisations across Canada and the United States as an effective awareness tool, and it is increasingly being promoted internationally.
Law enforcement agencies and airport communities globally play a critical role in identifying and preventing such crimes, but public vigilance is equally important. By being attentive to signs of distress and knowing how to respond, travellers can help ensure that the country’s main transport hub remains not only efficient, but safe and humane for everyone passing through it.
Have you ever seen anyone use this signal?
