MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) – McDonald’s released a report Tuesday claiming a more than $2.1 billion annual economic impact in Michigan.

The report, which was compiled with Oxford Economics, shows McDonald’s Corp. directly spends $1.2 billion per year in Michigan on wages, benefits, taxes and product purchases.

The economic impact of McDonald’s equals about 7% of what the auto industry generates in Michigan every year, according to the report.

McDonald’s franchisees operate more than 500 locations statewide with more than 29,800 direct employees. The fast food giant also purchased more than $332 million worth of ingredients in Michigan last year, supporting thousands more jobs.

Major ingredients purchases include 54 million pounds of cucumbers from Mr. Chips in Pinconning, millions of eggs from Cargill Kitchen Solutions in Ionia County and 103 million pounds of pork.

McDonald’s says it generated $669 million worth of federal, state and local tax revenue across Michigan. More than 660 McDonald’s employees across the state collected nearly $1.5 million from the chain’s tuition assistance program.
