Police have arrested a Maltese duo–a 25-year-old woman and an 82-year-old man–in connection with an international online fraud investigation.

The woman is suspected of being the principal local actor in an online fraud scheme. According to the police, she allegedly impersonated a local bank and defrauded around 200 victims of a collective €1 million.

Police investigations linked the woman to an international criminal network with links to Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Police carried out a simulatenous operation, in coordination with Europol and Irish and UK authorities, on Monday 2 February. Police seized €8,000 in cash from a residence in Paola and several mobile phones and electronic devices during another search in Qrendi.

The Irish Garda seized multiple mobile phones and electronic devices during its own searches.

Police investigations are still ongoing.
