Over 3 thousand traffic fatalities since 2000, Police Director: It’s a large number, over 100 last year alone

The General Director of the Kosovo Police, Gazmend Hoxha, in presenting the annual work of the Pristina Regional Police, said that from 2000 to today, over 3 people have lost their lives on the roads of Kosovo.
“The problems that have increased are the cases of fatalities and not only in Pristina but throughout Kosovo we have had an increase in traffic cases, where we have had somewhere over 100 people die in traffic from 89 in 2024. Kosovo has lost over 3,111 people in traffic since 2000. It is a large number of lives lost in traffic and one of the priorities has to be traffic safety. But since the police cannot do this work alone, we need the support of the municipalities, the Ministry of Infrastructure and the entire society, especially in raising people’s awareness, then to obtaining driver’s licenses, increased control on the road,” he said.
He listed some of the factors that have contributed to more traffic problems, one of which he highlights is the large number of people who have visited Kosovo. He also mentions statistics on driver’s licenses.
“Some of the factors that have contributed to more traffic problems over the past year have been the large number of people who have been circulating on our roads, and also the large number of people who have entered the borders of Kosovo, we have had an increase of one million people. We have had 2-3 million who have entered our territory. The number of registered vehicles and driver’s licenses has also increased. In 2011, Kosovo had somewhere around 400 thousand driver’s licenses, today we have 900 thousand,” said Hoxha.
The decline in cases in Pristina was assessed to have been due to murder, robbery and aggravated theft, and domestic violence. /eo
