    The pre-World War I Balkan wars and the 1990s Balkan Wars serve as bookends to the bulk of 20th century European history.

    Is it a coincidence that the border between Bulgaria and Romania is the same today?

  4. Bulgaria’s borders here are only slightly smaller that those of modern Bulgaria because the country lost almost all of its territorial gains in the subsequent Second Balkan War and World War I. After Ottoman Turkey they lost the most in these conflicts.
