Senate President Mircea Abrudean highlighted at a meeting with U.S. Department of State’s Deputy Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Riley M. Barnes that Romania must act in the Black Sea region as a provider of stability and deliver concrete progress to maintain a secure border.

‘The meeting (…) has real value for Romania and confirms the strength of the Strategic Partnership between the United States and Romania. The Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor within the U.S. Department of State plays a central role in promoting these priorities, and Romania has a direct interest because it is located on the eastern flank of NATO and the European Union and constantly faces sustained pressures,’ Abrudean wrote on Facebook on Thursday.

According to him, given that Romania has a war on its border, disinformation represents a ‘daily risk’.

‘We have a war on our border and disinformation represents a daily risk. For Romania, the example and support of the United States in maintaining the rule of law, integrity in public office, transparency, civic space and press freedom are essential. The regional context is decisive: Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, the Black Sea region. Romania must act as a provider of stability and deliver concrete progress to maintain a secure border and a clear path,’ Abrudean stressed.

Senate President Mircea Abrudean participates, in the period 3 to 6 February, in the Interparliamentary Security Forum organised in Washington D.C., United States. AGERPRES (RO – writing by: Livia Popescu; EN – writing by: Adina Panaitescu)
