  1. Can’t see the article, but presumably didn’t save for retirement and now doesn’t have much money?

Isn’t that somewhere a consequence of my actions moment.

  2. I keep getting adverts on Facebook, ‘I have to choose between heating and eating’. Lots of their grandchildren are probably doing the same…

  3. Nothing like a post about older people in hard times to showcase the nasty side of many posters

    Tl;Dr

I didn’t save for retirement, despite being a part of the most privileged generation in human existence.

Maybe a bit less avocado toast and fewer international holidays and this chap could get on the property ladder. Don’t fret old boy, just pull yourself up by your bootstraps!

  6. Welcome to the world of the under 30’s.

At least you had the chance to make it. They haven’t

  7. He probably made some poor choices but let’s be honest. British state pension, paying in your whole working life for a barely livable payout, isn’t exactly innocent compared to Germany or France

I can’t even lie for all the shitty comments here I don’t really think your life should be spent saving for a retirement that may never even come! Why should I suffer now and be miserable for the chance of what, retiring in my 60s with the health issues that brings?

There is a 100% chance he was cleaned out financially when he went to be a sexpat in the Philippines

I really don’t see why a pensioner should get more sympathy for this than a graduate.

  11. Two people buy a house together so the prices rose by loads due to the amount of money two people could pool compared to the old way with a stay at home wife

Eventually tenants will realise they can buy five room property together instead of renting and suddenly all the couples will be out priced as well

  12. Imagine being part of the generation with the most voting power in history, who essentially ruined everything for future generations by consistently voting in their own favour. Who consistently told young people, who complained about life being unaffordable, to just move to a worse area, or move further from their jobs, or sacrifice little material joys in life. And then coming out and complaining about the very life you sneered at others for complaining about.

Idk, maybe live within your means. Maybe buy less fancy coffee or avocado toast 👍.

Maybe move to an area further away from your family or friends- it’s costly to live in these trendy areas y’know?

  13. Not to sound like a broken record but this is going to be a very real problem that will pop up in the next 5-10 years. There’s a lot of people who never saved via a pension or missed out on the older DB pensions with little saved for retirement that are going to be very costly to house…

  14. So its ok if someone from Gen Y or Z has to do this, but as soon as a boomer has to, its injustice, its not right!! Look how we are treating our pensioners!!!

  15. I don’t know how it is elsewhere in the country, but where I live the housing associations have bungalows and flats for old people available all the time.
There are currently 8 available and 4 of those have been so for a few weeks.

  16. This honestly makes me sick with fear as a person stuck on benefits with long term illness, knowing that if I make it that long I’ll be in the same boat

  17. This goes against Reddits view that all pensioners are rich with million pound houses that should all just hurry up and freeze to death so we can be done with them and have their wealth. /s

You can get pension credits and pension age housing benefit…
At least a 1 bedroom rate as your over 35.

  19. My mum and I were both primary school teachers. When I started, her pension per month was higher than my salary.

My mum, aged 28, bought a 3 bedroom house with a modest mortgage.

Not a chance I could do the same.

  20. Im from a third world country and even there when you are old you get at minimum full minimum wage as a state pension. It depends how much you earn. Teacher per example earn 2-4x the minimum wage as state pension. The more you contribute over the years, the more you earn later.

I found it strange why so many older brits move abroad or are working in supermarkets, retail and so on even after retirement, now i know why. They are smart. Best thing one can do is emigrate somewhere else when they are older

  21. I genuinely think this will be my generation (millennials) when we are old, and I’m not against the idea tbh. Most people my age who earn decent money don’t own their own homes and have no realistic way to be able to. I think it would be cool to live with flatmates into old age, you wouldn’t get lonely! I’m 41 now and live with my best mate and we have a blast! Living with others isn’t always a bad thing.

  22. So when millennials and Gen Z live in HMOs without a triple locked pension and choose between heating or eating with no WFA that is completely acceptable but suddenly when the odd pensione has to do the same due to poor planning suddenly it’s a newsworthy story?

  23. Sounds like he went to Philippines to bang young looking chicks and got cleaned out of I’m being honest.
