  1. Europe is at a point where it needs to finalize the European continent expansion (accept all the western Balkans for geographical integrity). After that it needs to go for federation. Common army, common border controls, common foreign policy, centralization of services like stock markets, IT systems, etc. Nurturing of local cloud providers, and other critical services.

Only when that is done Europe might have the case to look for further expansion.

The reason for the articles like the one above is that malicious third parties are trying to sway EU’s attention away from further integration, by offering dreams like Canada in the EU.

  2. No, don’t want to open our borders for their failed immigration policies. They can keep their millions of Indians.

I don’t know if we have enough Frontex to protect the border between the Greater European Empire and the US.

The EU should only have members with geographic borders between them, or islands very close by. Borders far away with volatile neighbours are always a huge liability, as we can see with Ukraine and Russia. Hell, even closer, Kaliningrad and Belarus are bad enough too. We don’t need Canada across an ocean and having that huge border with the US

  5. This Canuck would be happy with it! Would save me having to go through German bureaucracy to get dual citizenship.

Canada would bring half a continent of resources that the EU desperately needs. Strategically it makes sense for Europe and is expansion through shared values rather than force or coercion.

But it won’t happen. Some EU countries don’t like Indians and feel Canada would be a back door entry for Indians into the EU. Commenters with that opinion are pretty open about their racial views on this sub too.

  7. While I am in favour of much closer ties with Canada and other middle powers, I do not think EU membership is the solution to this. Rather, I would like to see a new G20 or OECD kind of confederation (as in intergouvernmental) between all middle powers ideologically aligned, excluding the US but including Japan, SK etc.

Stop. no they should not join. It is called eu for a reason. We should not be in a political union with random contries around the world. Canada and eu can still work together without being in a union

I think a union between the EU and Canada would be a match made in heaven. They complement each other perfectly.

woah so Aus gets into Eurovision but Canada gets to join the EU. that’s a kick in the teeth

  11. Canada should be given a special status as EU partner not too dissimilar from Norway or Switzerland, including free trade and ease of movement. But actually joining the EU is much of a logistical problem and probably unnecessary too

This is not going to happen, and is a distraction from what we should be doing. Canada and the EU share common values and would mutually benefit from increased trade and collaboration in areas like research, academics and defense. Canadian membership in the EU is neither necessary nor even desirable in order to achieve what we need to achieve.

Please take them! They are like the scolded girlfriend that drunk texts you 30 times an hour.

Everyone who argues that the EU as an institution should stay exclusive to Europe misses the point that this organisation has gone through various name and scope changes since its inception as the European Coal and Steel Community.

Bringing Canada into the fold could only be a net benefit for us, even if it might justify a rename. The point is to create a strong unified economy with other democratic states in our proximity, to the mutual benefit of all.

  15. Omg can we stop this? It’s very cringe and will never ever happen. Must we deepen economic and defense cooperation with Canada? Yes. Will Canada ever join the EU? Absolutely no.

I mean, if they are willing to do the job on food standards, judicial etc, I am all for it!

Populationwise they are the same size as Ukraine, it’s not a problem. But I don’t think the Canadians actually will want it.

I think Canada can offer to EU oil and gas while Europe can offer to Canada the biggest internal commercial market in the world in order to diversify.

  18. Lets just make a “greater Union”. Canada, EU, Australia and maybe Japan or south Korea too. Even the UK can rejoin. Free travel for everyone.

  19. The EU having a land border of thousands of kilometers with the US would be very problematic.

Why though? Before trump spoke about Canada becoming the 51st state the conservatives who are mini trumps were favourite to win. This nonsense is getting more and more ridiculous.
