It always seemed like the best leverage the west had was allowing Russia to plug back into the world economy to return to pre 2022 borders. Russia’s economy is fueled solely by the war at this point. If the war ends and they aren’t allowed to plug back in, their economy will go belly up and Putin now has starving Russian mobs looking for a scape goat.

This whole misadventure into Ukraine by Russia has been an utter strategic mistake. China is more of an existential threat to Russia than an independent Ukraine and an independent Belarus, would ever be.
China has a grudge toward western powers and yes Russia is one of those western powers. China wants to right some historical wrongs as shown in maps. Reclaiming Outer Manchuria may not have the priority of Taiwan but it almost certainly is on the list. If a conflict were to break out between Russia and China… it won’t be like 1969 when China was far weaker. China has industrial might to support its military now. Russia will almost certainly need the West to help push China back if nuclear weapons are to be avoided. By antagonizing Ukraine, the Caucasus, NATO… Russia spoils the potential rapprochement and support in such a conflict.
Putin holding onto some fanciful dream of reestablishing a Neo-Soviet empire is folly. It would have been far better for Russia to abandon Putin and his foolish dreams and work more towards a future where Russia could conceivably be a part of or associated with the European Union. That is completely impossible for now.
