Just hoping someone can help me understand this. I’m using Myki in Melbourne and I thought the maximum daily fare was $11.40, but I’ve noticed I’m being charged more than that on some days.
I tap on and off as normal and don’t travel outside metro zones (as far as I know). I’m not sure if I’m missing something like zone issues, pass vs money, failed touch-offs, or anything else that could cause this.
Has anyone else experienced this or knows why this happens? Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks!

The first tap could have been for a previous journey?
Because you didn’t tap off on the 29th or earlier
myki fares are charged when you tap off. if you don’t tap off, the payment will go through the next time you tap on your card.
Because you tapped on. Try not tapping on next time.
Gotta pay what you owed for the last day you travelled.
Check your last trip.
If you don’t tap off on a previous day’s travel, like if you get a tram (since you don’t have to tap off on trams) then your fare for that day isn’t charged until the next time you tap on.
Because they can
Every single one of these posts could be easily addressed if the screenshot included the last trip from the previous day.
I am certain this is because you didn’t touch off on the last trip of your previous day, and you got charged for that day’s fare when you started your next trip.
The only time you get charged when touching on is when it’s charging you for a previous trip where you didn’t touch off. For a long time there was a loophole with Android mobile Mykis where you could delete your card and create a new one to avoid being charged.
TIL they raised the fare again lol. Still thought it was 5.50. Huh.
Normally it should say (Default fare) below the first one (Reservoir) if it was for the previous day. Either way it looks like the tap off for the prior day.
This will be a default fare. Sadly google wallet doesn’t do a good job as classing as a default fare. Ensure you touch off every service and you will only see two charges. If you like, reach out in DM and I can get a close friend to check the chsrges on the syatem end for you
r/Melbournetrains should be your first stop for any PT related questions. They live and breathe this stuff.
