An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred after midnight on Sunday, February 8th, 2026, at 12:33 am local time near Chania, Crete, Greece, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 31. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 4.6, and The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 4.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Gialos (pop. 870) located 60 km from the epicenter, Palaiochora (pop. 2,400) 64 km away, Kissamos (pop. 4,200) 76 km away, Agia Marina (pop. 2,000) 97 km away, Galatas (pop. 3,200) 99 km away, and Chania (pop. 53,900) 105 km away.
