To date, no Treasurer has had the temerity to rein in the fossil fuel industry. If any time is the best, it’s now when the Coalition is on its knees and separated, with Labor’s authority from a huge electoral mandate, and as the Independents and the Greens cry out for reform. Phase out subsidies, and properly tax profits and polluters. Measures like these would put tax benefits where they should be, with the taxpayer, fix the cost of living crisis, buoy the economy and reduce dangerous atmospheric emissions. This year, Australia has been hit by climate-related disasters. The government, if nothing else, should make those who knowingly created the climate crisis pay big time. If not now, when?
